A Boy With An Expression

Newcastle Herald

Tuesday May 27, 2008

GR

A boy with an

expression

perhaps beyond

his years carries a

historical

photograph of a

lynching during the

annual Super

Sunday parade that

features Mardi

Gras indians in

New Orleans,

Louisiana. Secret

"indian" gangs,

comprised of

African-Americans

from inner-city New

Orleans, began

appearing in the

city in the 1880s as

a homage to the

Native Americans

who sheltered

runaway slaves.
