VISITORS to the John Paynter gallery at the Lock-Up will enjoy a new exhibition featuring works that offer a contemporary take on a historical area.

Interpretations . . . Coal River Precinct features works by 25 artists reflecting modern artistic techniques and historic inspiration.

Co-curator and exhibition contributor Varelle Hardy said the show was designed to raise awareness of the Coal River Precinct and its historical significance, promote Newcastle artists and raise money for the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery redevelopment.

"This area [Coal River Precinct] has been nominated for world heritage listing so it's nice to create an awareness," she said.

"There is a lot of history in the area but we live here now and it is nice to get a contemporary take on history."

Part of the National Trust's 2008 Heritage Festival, the exhibition, comprising painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography, focuses on iconic images of the Coal River Precinct, from the harbour to industrial machinery.

Lock-Up manager Geraldine Bobsien said the exhibition displayed a diverse range of skill and technique while communicating a passion for place.

"The artists in this show are featured for their connection to the area and it is fitting their work is showcased in this important heritage building," she said.

The exhibition will run until April 20.
